The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM ) have entered into an agreement to pursue a single, unified accreditation system for graduate medical education programs in the United States beginning in July 2015. Over the coming months, the three organizations will work toward defining a process, format and timetable for ACGME to accredit all osteopathic graduate medical education programs currently accredited by AOA. AOA and AACOM would then become organizational members of ACGME.

“This is a watershed moment for medical training in the U.S,” noted Thomas Nasca, M.D., M.A.C.P., chief executive officer of ACGME. “This would provide physicians in the United States with a uniform path of preparation for practice. This approach would ensure that the evaluation and accountability for the competency of resident physicians are consistent across all programs,” he added.

After several months of national conversations about the need to reduce the federal deficit, President Obama released his fiscal year (FY) 2013 budget that proposes to lower the national debt by $3.2 trillion over 10 years. But for medical schools and teaching hospitals, there is bad news: About 9 percent of that reduction, or $358 billion over 10 years, will come from Medicare and Medicaid programs, including graduate medical education (GME). Here are details about the effect on GME from the AAMC Reporter (March, 2012 issue).

A resident driven project in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Florida will enable pulse-oximetry to improve patient safety in operating rooms around the world that don’t currently have access to this important patient safety technology. Dr. Sephalie Patel, currently a PGY-4 resident in Anesthesiology, enlisted the aid of her parents (directors of the Wise Foundation) and issued a challenge grant to the department. If every faculty member would donate $250 to purchase a “Lifebox” pulse oximeter and every resident donate some amount of money toward the purchase of a Lifebox, the Wise Foundation would donate sufficient money to enable each resident’s contribution to purchase a Lifebox. This picture shows a check covering the purchase of 135 Lifeboxes for distribution throughout the third world being given to Atul Gawande, MD by incoming American Society of Anesthesiologists President Jerry Cohen (a faculty member here at UF). Dr. Patel and Dr. Kiki Nin (PGY-3) resident organized bake sales and a party to encourage resident donation. Administrative staff assisted as well by contributing and organizing bake sales. Congratulations to the Department of Anesthesiology for showing that they care about patient safety all around the world. Thanks to all of you and especially to the Wise Foundation for their extraordinary generosity.
