Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER)
CLER Overview
- CLER is a way that the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) assesses the learning and working environment of our sponsoring institution and participating sites for residency and fellowship programs.
- CLER emphasizes quality and safety of the environment in which patient care and learning occur..
- CLER site visits are designed to help us learn, continually improve and enhance interprofessional team-based care.
- The focus of CLER is institution-wide, not on individual programs.

CLER Site Visit Expectations/Logistics
What to expect during Large Group Meetings (PDs, Faculty, Resident/Fellow Sessions)
Large group meetings (PD, Faculty, Resident/Fellow) will consist of 30 people each plus the ACGME CLER site visitors. Meetings are relatively low key. You will be asked questions, asked to participate in discussions and to provide examples of activities or situations related to CLER.
- Log in 10 minutes prior to meeting. If you are late, you may not be admitted to the meeting.
- You will be required to have two devices: 1) a laptop/desktop to join via zoom and 2) a phone/tablet to participate in polling.
- Each person must log in to their own laptop/desktop and be in a place where a private conversation can be held. Groups may not log in on or share one laptop/desktop.
What to expect during Walking Rounds
Senior Level Housestaff Executive Committee or Quality and Patient Safety Committee (PGY3 or higher) and/or Chief Residents will be asked to take a site visitor to various parts of the institution during specified times when and where ambulatory care occurs. During this time, the site visitors will speak to residents/fellows, faculty members, nursing staff, other staff and patients.
Please answer questions honestly during the site visit. If you are unable to answer, please say so.
