UF Health – Shands Hospital & Clinics

As a resident or fellow physician, your role during a hurricane is critical to ensuring patient care continues safely and effectively. This page provides essential information to help you prepare if you are required to stay on campus during a hurricane event.
Before the Hurricane
1. Know Your Reporting Expectations
- Outpatient Clinics: Typically closed during the storm.
- Elective Surgeries: Both freestanding sites and hospital-based elective surgeries typically close during the storm.
- Confirm your reporting schedule with your program director or supervisor.
- Be aware of your assigned duties and any potential changes to shifts or coverage.
2. Call Rooms & Sleeping Arrangements
- Limited space is available.
- If you are required to stay in the hospital, bring your own bedding if possible (airbeds, sleeping bags, blankets).
- If your program does not typically require in-house coverage but will during the storm, notify Alex Platinetty immediately so accommodations can be arranged based on room and office availability.
- Call rooms may need to be shared between programs.
- Faculty and staff are encouraged to use departmental office areas. Faculty may only use housestaff call rooms if:
- Space is clearly available and
- They are unable to secure accommodations elsewhere.
- Nursing and the Command Center will coordinate with departments to identify additional space for faculty/staff as needed.
2. Food & Supplies
- Food will typically be available in-house; certain locations remain open during the storm.
- Bring personal snacks, especially if you have dietary restrictions or preferences.
4. Arrange Personal Affairs
- Inform family and emergency contacts of your possible extended work hours.
- Arrange childcare or pet care as needed.
- Secure your home and important belongings before reporting to the hospital.
During the Hurricane
1. Stay Informed
- Monitor official hospital communications for updates and instructions.
- Keep your phone charged and accessible for alerts.
2. Adhere to Safety Protocols
- Follow all hospital safety guidelines and emergency procedures.
- Limit movement outside designated safe areas during severe weather.
3. Duty Hours & Requirements
- Operations will follow “emergency conditions.”
- Work hours, supervision, and safety standards remain in place.
- Caps and patient care loads may be expanded if necessary, provided safety is maintained.
4. Self-Care and Rest
- Take advantage of designated rest areas and break rooms.
- Stay hydrated and eat when possible to maintain energy levels.
- Communicate with supervisors about any concerns or needs.
After the Hurricane
1. Reporting Post-Event
- Await instructions on shift changes or release procedures.
- Report any safety concerns or damages to your supervisor promptly.
2. Debrief and Support
- Participate in any debriefings or feedback sessions.
- Access available mental health or wellness resources if needed.
