Bloodborne Pathogen (Needlestick) Exposure Management

Report the Exposure Immediately

Notify:

  • Your attending or Senior resident/fellow.
  • Your program director and/or program coordinator.

Regular Business Hours Process:

  1. Call the Needlestick Hotline (352) 265-2727.
  2. Student Healthcare Center (SHCC) OccMed Staff will send an order for baseline labs, to include: HIV, Hep B Surface Antigen, Hep C Surface Antibody, CBC and CMP through Beeker System (UF Core Labs).
  3. SHCC OccMed Staff (Lou specifically), writes up the DWC-25, which is a document that AmeriSys requires for each lab draw until the employee reaches MMI (Maximum Medical Improvement). Dr. Dewar signs off and then the forms are submitted to billing for payment via Student Health Billing Process.

After-Hours Process:

  1. Call the Needlestick Hotline (352) 265-2727.
  2. The hotline will instruct the employee to go to the Emergency Room for their baseline labs.
  3. Reminder: You will need to report the claim to AmeriSys at 1-800-455-2079.
  4. The next business day, SHCC OccMed Staff will follow up with the employee and the ER to confirm all components were performed properly.
  5. SHCC OccMed Staff (Lou specifically), writes up the DWC-25, which is a document that AmeriSys requires for each lab draw until the employee reaches MMI (Maximum Medical Improvement). Dr. Dewar signs off and then the forms are submitted to billing for payment via Student Health Billing Process.

Infectious Disease/Communicable Disease Notification/Process:

Please note: This applies to exposures involving tuberculosis (TB).

  1. Shands Occupational Health (Dr. Iovine & Scott Brown) Will notify UF OccMed (Karen and Lou @ SHCC Occ Med Clinic)
  2. Karen will notify each resident/faculty member from the list of potential exposures, instructing them to report the incident to AmeriSys at 1-800-455-2079.
  3. AmeriSys will then send the employee for treatment once the claim is approved by the State of Florida.
