International Medical Graduates (IMGs) bring valuable global perspectives that enrich patient care and foster a more inclusive healthcare environment. At the University of Florida, we recognize the importance of a diverse medical team in delivering high-quality care to a multicultural population. IMGs who plan to pursue Graduate Medical Education (GME) in the U.S. must not only meet the academic and professional prerequisites (e.g., NRMP, USMLE, ECFMG certification, visa requirements), but also understand the cultural, social, linguistic, and healthcare expectations of the American medical system.
In addition to satisfying the University of Florida’s institutional requirements, IMGs should be prepared for the educational, cultural, and personal transitions involved in relocating to and training in Gainesville, Florida. The following information is designed to help guide you through this process.
Visa Sponsership
- UF-COM sponsors J-1 visas for residency training only through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
- In limited, case-by-case circumstances, UF-COM may sponsor new H-1B visas for training in select medical specialties.
- Permanent resident aliens with existing U.S. work authorization are also eligible and encouraged to apply.
Application Process
- All applications must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) or Residency Centralized Application Service (ResidencyCAS).
- Once selected or matched for a program, IMGs must contact UF – Finance and Administration and complete all required paperwork promptly to ensure deadlines are met.
Important Note on Social Security Numbers
- J-1 visa holders must wait to apply for a Social Security number until they have checked in with their department and SEVIS validation is complete.
- Applying too early may result in significant delays.
